Inverse | Review by Grayson Coutts, a nz professional make up artist

The great Grayson Coutts, a kiwi professional make up artist got his hands on the Inverse Hair Conditioning System and shares with us his thoughts.

'We all know that high heat damages hair. And while styling tools are forever improving and have certainly not surpassed their need, even the best still cause some damage over time. However, if heat is damaging, then what does cold do to your hair?

You’re probably already familiar with the benefits of cold water for your hair and skin; we all know what happens to hair in tropical humidity vs a cool alpine climate. But this is next level. Treating your hair with sub-zero temperature in the hopes of improving its strength, hydration and shine.

Inverse is the world’s first hair treatment system uses sub-zero temperatures (by storing it in the freezer) and is designed to reverse the damage caused by heat and chemical styling or colouring. It’s been revealed that when hair is exposed to specific sub-zero temperatures, it causes the follicles to take in and sustain increased moisture, making the hair healthier and less susceptible to damage and breakage.

You use it sort of how you would a hair straightener, however instead of plugging it into power, you ‘charge’ it in the freezer, and the effect is obviously very different. It maintains temperature for up to an hour which is plenty of time as it should only take 5-10 minutes to treat your hair.

I feel it’s worth mentioning that this is definitely not a styling tool or something to replace your ghd irons, as in it doesn’t straighten or curl your hair; it’s a treatment that you can use before and/or after heat styling to improve the condition of your hair. In saying that though, if you really only use your hot irons more to smooth out your frizz, then this may in fact help reduce how much you use them.

HOW TO USE:

  1. You place the core of the device in the freezer for 2-4 hours (you can store it in the freezer permanently)
  2. Remove from the freezer and allow 5 minutes for them to settle, then click the core back into the styler. Little magnets hold it in place.
  3. Comb through hair to remove any tangles and take a medium section of hair, and slowly run the plates through the section as if you were using a hair straightener
  4. You can use the styler on wet or dry hair; as a prep treatment or a finishing treatment to set your style. You can even use it in the shower after shampooing.

Like most treatments, I think this is the kind of system that works best with prolonged use, however I definitely saw impressive results after only one treatment. My model had bleached, slightly dry hair that had been freshly washed. You can pretty plainly see that the hair looks in much better condition after the Inverse treatment. I divided my models hair into 2 sections down the centre of the head and then split each section into 4 to ensure all hair was evenly treated. I then finished off with a blow wave.

THE RESULT:

My model’s hair looked super silky and shiny after the blow wave, and although this is not altogether unusual for a blow wave, the most impressive result immediately was in the feel and manageability of the hair. The texture of her hair was honestly incredible; I’ve never felt anything like it. It felt sort of like silk – smooth and feather light like air, and it had fantastic movement about it.'
